The Brentwood Hotel Story
"HISTORY"
Brentwood Hotel is a fantasy name used for my small, selective stud of Texel cavies (Guinea pigs).
The whole story started well back in my childhood when I had my first cavy, a tortie-white Peruvian mix. He was a great pet, but cavies were forgotten after him for a few years.
Then, I felt I needed cavies again, so I went to the pet shop which I knew had the best cavies available in Hungary at that time. So, Boston arrived, a cinnamon-agouti/white Peruvian mix. Then, keeping and breeding cavies became my favourite pastime.
Even before Boston, I started showing my Cocker Spaniels, I started travelling to visit shows around Europe. I first saw purebred cavies in Denmark, on occassion of the World Dog Show, where a smaller cavy show took place, too. I fell in love with these wonderful animals right away, and started looking for them. I found a few very good books in English on my trips to London and Amsterdam, so I could study the different breeds, how to keep and show them.
THE BEGINNING
Finally, when I visited the dog show in Tulln (Austria) in October 1997, I was very surprised to see a cavy show there, too, the first cavy show since the one in Copenhagen. Although it was the first time I saw Texels, I knew I wanted that breed right away! I was lucky enough to be able to by two wonderful youngsters from the lines of Ms. Eva Wiesinger (Wiesie's Guineapigs). The chocolate boar, which I simply called "Chocolate" and the black-cream sow ("Blue") became the first foundation animals of my line. They produced my first ever own-bred Texel "Andersen at Brentwood Hotel", who still can bee seen in many of today's pedigrees in Hungary.
Since 1997, I imported texels from the following Austrian studs:
"vom Schloss Mogador" (Mrs. Ursula Marx)
"vom Mozartweg" (Mrs. Hedwig Geyer)
"The Star is Born" (Mrs. Gabriela Strauch).
Many thanks for all these nice ladies for their help, advice and the great animals they provided.
BRITISH IMPORTS
2000. brought a big change for my stud, as I imported 7 Texels from Ms. Frances Rossi (Great-Britain). These marvellous animals brought a new "push" to my work. They - also combined with my previous Austrian lines - have produced some very typical specimen of their breed.
Special thanks to Ms. Rossi for the stock she sent to me!
RECENT PROJECTS
Nowadays, I try to concentrate on breeding particolour Texels - with the help of some nice Shelties.
Starting with particolours was not a difficult task, as most of my imports from Ms. Rossi, and some of my first Austrian-bred animals were of such colours. My German imports have helped improve these colours, too. I used to breed many shades of tricolours, but in the past years, I have kept tortoiseshell-whites only, and I am planning to stick to that colour in the future.
From 2003, I started building up a line of slate blues and lilacs. During the years, I gave up lilacs, and had more and more slate babies. But I had to concede that I do not have enough place, time and simply energy to work with two separate lines (particolours and self slate blues) at the same time, so even if I feel so sorry about that, I had to stop the self slates. Some of the slates will live further in some slate blue tri animals, which will merge into the tortoiseshell-whites.
So from 2008, there will be only parti-colour Brentwood Hotel cavies: in tortoiseshell-white - and sometimes in slate blue -gold-white hopefully. (Some of my animals still produce red-white.)
